Hi, I’m Rachel Barkataki – I run Barko’s Pet Services.Working with dogs has always been a dream of mine, but it was always something I thought would remain a dream; it was something that other people got to do. I grew up with dogs, first a springer spaniel, then a German Shepherd and then 2 Tibetan terriers before going to drama college to study stage management (not quite a ‘proper’ job but almost!). I worked as a stage manager for 8 years and decided towards the end of my theatre career that I really did want to work with animals and have been moving towards that ever since.I moved to Exeter in 2008 for a change in lifesytle. I had been working in London’s West End and been on tour with various theatre productions and having worked in a black box all that time, longed to be see the great outdoors.
After moving to Exeter my husband and I finally decided to get a dog. In came Dude, our chocolate labrador, and we haven’t looked back. Getting a dog made us go out and explore the lovely countryside that Devon has to offer. And we take him everywhere. After about a year, we decided that it would be nice for him to have a dog buddy at home, so now we have Noodle. I will keep you up to date with their exploits on the blog page!
I am continuing to learn about dog training and behaviour, having already completed a course with COAPE and a dog training course with ADTB and looking into further education courses. I have also worked with chickens on a on a free range farm, helping to set up a breeding programme and looking after 800 chickens, and with horses when I was younger, helping out at a friends stable.
