Around the 12th century Spon Street played an important role in the prosperity of Coventry. Here weavers made quality woollen cloth and dyers and tanners worked next to the river Sherbourne that ran blue from the dye - the highly prized cloth gave rise to the expression "True as Coventry Blue".

Formerly the Green Dragon Inn at 122 123 Much Park Street, the present front range of C. 1500 was built on the site of an earlier three bay hall house. The rear block is C. 1450 and consisted of the hall of the inn and two upper floors for guests. A wide through-passage linked both buildings to a courtyard and rear wing demolished about 1900. The heavy frame of the west gable belonged to its earlier and grander neighbour destroyed during the war.

The building was dismantled in 1972 and reconstructed in 1981-82 as part of the City Corporation's Spon Street Townscape Scheme.
