The Spirit of Yoga

June 21st, July 19th, August 16th, September 27th, October 18th November 15th and December 15th – 10:00am to 4:00pm each day

This course is suitable for all serious yoga students who would like to learn more about yoga and its underlying philosophy. The aim of these workshops is to explore a yoga topic in depth with a group of like minded people and a team of experienced teachers. We have chosen themes which involve practices that can significantly deepen your understanding and experience of yoga. Each day will include physical asana work, pranayama, meditation, relaxation and discussion. The topics are as follows:

The chakras are subtle energy centres in the body. There are seven major chakras along the midline of the torso, neck and head, and lesser-known minor chakras in other parts of the body such as the hands. This workshop presents a more in-depth look into chakra theory and practice. You will find out how particular postures and yoga practices affect different chakras, and learn to use visualisation of the chakras – powerful tool for self-development and self-healing. Beyond mindfulness July 19th with Lina & Karin
What lies beyond the present moment?
Mindfulness is a buzz word and hailed by many as the way to improved wellbeing. Being in the present moment, aware of body, breath and mind, is an essential part of yoga practice. But where can mindfulness take us? Is “being in the now” enough? As in all workshops in this series, we will practice asana, pranayama, meditation and relaxation with a specific focus on mindfulness, with tips and discussion on taking our practice “beyond mindfulness”, towards insight and wisdom. Yoga for longevity – Live longer and healthier lives
Aug 16th with Lina & Cora
The Hatha Yoga Pradipika, an important historical text on yoga practice, says this about Vipareeta Karani Mudra (half shoulderstand): “The practice should be done daily. After 6 months grey hairs & wrinkles become inconspicuous. One who practices for 3 hours overcomes death.” We can’t guarantee this but come along to experience this wonderful asana and lots of other yoga practices that will keep us as well as we can be – especially if we are all to live until 100 soon! Challenging asanas & other practices – Working towards more challenging asanas
Sept 27th with Cora & Karin
This will be a day where you will work with some of the less frequently practised asanas and those that present more of a challenge. For example we will cover accessible and safe ways to work towards headstand. There will also be time to still the mind and body with pranayama, meditation and relaxation. Mandalas & Yantras – Create a personal mandala, deep relaxation techniques and more
Oct 18th with Lina & Karin
This is a subject key to tantric practices and an area that is little taught. You will have the opportunity to create a personal mandala or use a classic one for meditation. The day will also include posture work and pranayama & deep relaxation techniques related to the visual sense. Spiritual yoga – Discover the spiritual side of yoga practice
Nov 15th with Lina & Cora
Western practitioners of yoga always say yoga is a science that has no religious bias – it can however compliment your own spiritual path. Come & explore the spiritual side of yoga through practice discussion & understanding of the roots of yoga spirituality. Yoga philosophy to inspire practice – Exploring some major themes from key yoga texts
Dec 13th with Cora & Karin
Yoga philosophy is often hinted at in weekly classes. You may have heard about Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, or the Upanishads. You may wonder how these ancient texts can inform and inspire our yoga practice today, on and off the mat? We will spend the day exploring major themes from key yoga texts, applying them to the different aspects of practice including asana, pranayama, meditation and relaxation. You will also be able to deepen your understanding of the yoga philosophy through reflection and discussion.

The teachers are all experienced British Wheel of Yoga teachers Cora Kemball-Cook, Lina Newstead and Karin van Maanen
Each day will be led by two of the above teachers.
Cost is £40 per workshop if booking for 1 or 2 workshops
