He then, towards the back end of 1991 enrolled as an apprentice Painter and Decorator at CC training, in Richmond Road, Exeter on a YTS college based arrangement. In roughly 6 months in June he had passed all the modules and gained the City and Guilds Certificate 6091 in June 1992, aged just 17. It was understood he couldn't go any further at that college and he set out to find a placement where he could be based while he took his NVQ's at the main decorating college, in Haldon Road, Exeter. In late 1994 Simon became aware his current employers and him didn't have a long term future together as they saw things differently, and he set off to pave his way as a sub contractor working for local building companies and established decorating companies.

Although Simon enjoyed much of the work and made some good friends, he became aware that his colleagues attention to detail didn't match his own, and grew tired of using mainly 2 colours (white and magnolia) on cold building sites, and craved the new challenges that higher end, and more prestigious work would throw up.
