Royal school of motoring

Trusted for 10 years

ROYAL (School of Motoring), was started in 1981 by Martin Ferid opening an office in Camberwell shortly after. This was at a time long before speed humps & traffic cameras.
Most people picked up from the office and the AA were only a breakdown service, no plumbers or driving instructors yet.

BSM were independent and the benchmark, providing tuition throughout the UK. (Now owned by the AA). It was felt that a small team of qualified professional instructors with personal skills & a concern for road safety was greatly needed. ROYAL (School of Motoring) was born.

During 1983 we realised that recruiting qualified driving instructors who were committed in the same way was proving difficult, so we approached the DVSA, who guided us in training our own.

Word of mouth spread and the school grew. In 1987 the government launched ADITE (Approved Driving Instructor Training Establishments), which was a recommended register for training driving instructors. Of the 500 or so training establishments before ADITE only 50 or so made the grade and remained registered afterwards.

Martin Ferid was elected onto the ADITE committee by its members and was responsible for liaising between the DVSA & the ADITE membership. ADITE eventually became ORDIT (Official Register of Driving Instructor Training) establishments. So there was now an official register, recommended by the government.

The reason the ‘instructor training’ side is so important, is that any driving school is only as good as its driving instructors, most of our instructors are ‘home grown’, guaranteeing quality tuition.

In 1989 we opened our second office in Lewisham, continually expanding but with an extremely selective recruitment policy.

By the mid 1990’s we had cars all over London and the Home Counties. We found that having an office in one place and remote instructors, as most driving schools do these days was not for us; much preferring to deal face to face, with the local community.

As the years went by we began to teach the children of people who had passed with us many years before. In addition we have had a number of pupils who have passed their driving test and later gone on to train and become qualified driving instructors.

Unlike the AA & many others we specialise in what we do best, tuition for both the theory & practical part of the driving test as well as all three parts of the qualifying examinations to become a driving instructor.

Our commitment to ALL is to provide good value tuition in a safe environment, creating good drivers for today’s demanding conditions. If you would like to learn to drive, on manual or auto, safely and quickly or become a driving instructor with a job at the end, CALL US!
