Once known as The Exeter Dental Hospital, during the Pre-war period and up until 1947, the practice was located in Queen’s Street opposite the entrance to the then market. Patients in the chair had a good view of the statue of Queen Victoria on the top and it was run by a Mr Martyr. In 1948 the practice was bought by Ted Lyne and joined the NHS, becoming one of the largest NHS practices in Exeter. In 1954, Bob Bendall joined the practice and it became a partnership, ‘Lyne & Bendall’.It then moved to Princesshay, into a new building in 1962, where Geoff Ames joined as an associate with Stephen Skitt a short while later. The partnership of ‘Lyne, Bendall & Ames’ was formed in 1974. In 1976 Lyne retired to sail around the world, several times! ‘Bendall, Ames and Skitt’ formed with Andrew Skitt joining next, followed by Martyn Shepherd. Bendall retired in May 1989 with the partnership becoming ‘Ames, Skitt, Skitt & Shepherd’ until Ames retired in 1993.After the redevelopment of Princesshay the practice relocated to an enviable city centre location by the Rougemount castle, whereupon it underwent an extensive surgery refurbishment and changed its name to Castle Square Dental Practice.Over 60 years on and into 2012, and the now family-owned practice is going from strength to strength. With a strong team of clinicians and wonderful, long-standing support staff, the practice continues to push on into the 21st Century and The Exeter Dental Centre Ltd is putting quality dentistry on the map in Exeter!
