Trusted for 10 years
Stockport Golf Club was founded in 1905, and the present course, which was primarily designed by Sandy Herd, the 1902 Open Champion, lies in rural woodland close to the Derbyshire and Cheshire border. The lay-out of the 18 holes often attracts the plaudits of golf writers as well as the discerning visitor.
Many famous golfers have played the course over the years, including Harry Vardon, James Braid and John Henry Taylor, who played an exhibition match with Sandy Herd when the present course was officially opened. Between them they had won the Open Championship 18 times. Also the American Ryder Cup team, including Gene Sarazen and Walter Hagan, played against a team of local amateurs in front of a crowd of six to seven thousand people in 1929. In recent years, the Club has played host to Open Regional Qualifiers and many major County Championships. It was during an Open Qualifier at Stockport that Charl Schwartzel, the 2011 Masters Champion, shot a 64 to set a new course record.
The Club is proud of the high quality and presentation of the course and the excellent standard of catering and hospitality provided by our staff. We are the envy of many Clubs throughout the area for the wonderful service provided over 20 years by Paul Hill, the Steward, and his wife Tina. Rarely a day goes by without the Secretary receiving a compliment about the high quality of food, the excellent service and the warm welcome.
