A stroke doesn’t just affect half of who you are...

If your brain has been injured by a stroke, you are suddenly unable to move, feel and understand your body in the way you always have. For most people, it’s a deeply traumatic experience that affects not only what you can do physically, but also the whole of how you feel as a person. At The Stroke Centre you will find an approach that is rooted in understanding that having a stroke affects the whole of who you are, not just one side of your body, and with that understanding comes an unexpected free gift - optimism!

A stroke doesn’t just affect half of who you are...

Optimism can be in short supply following a stroke, especially as time goes by. It’s often said in medical circles that most recovery comes in the first few weeks and months, and other things being equal, of course that’s true. However, other things aren’t always equal – in particular, people experience different amounts of trauma, and they are affected by it in different ways. Sometimes what looks like neurological damage is actually a person’s response to the overwhelming experience of suffering a stroke. So why is that a cause for optimism? Because, with patience and the right skills, it is possible to explore what you’re experiencing and to shed light on how much is due to neurological damage and how much may be resulting from the trauma of your experience. Then it becomes possible to tackle the problems you’re left with using approaches that are known to be helpful for each – and addressing trauma-related issues as they arise means that skilled specialist physiotherapy techniques can be focused on the neurological problems where they can be most effective. With 33 years experience as a Chartered Physiotherapist, 32 years at a senior level specialising in neurological conditions, and also as a tutor for the Bobath approach, I can draw on a thorough grounding in evidence-based neuro-physiotherapy. And my further training in Cranio-Sacral Therapy and Embodied Relational Therapy mean that I can also offer the insight and the interpersonal skills to truly include ‘whole-person’ issues in my therapeutic approach, helping to gently disentangle the effects of trauma so that you can make more of your potential for recovery.
