About Us
The ‘Works’ beyond yoga instructors (by Ervin Menyhart)
My work in the field of yoga revolves around building a methodology
to help people explore, understand and access yoga. Not the broadly
available, commodified, ‘factory approach’ based yoga, but the one that
has the potential to change your life, to show you who you really are.
My continuously evolving methodology, my approach is the result of my
journey with (and without) yoga over the past three decades or so. A
significant part of it is the flexible level of interaction between
myself and those practicing around me in the groups. The deeper the
interest, the closer we can work, the more effectively we can share.
We’re all learners – i am no ‘authority’, but just another person like
you – looking, learning to see. Thus my work is, and will remain, work
in progress…
I have started organising and leading yoga classes in December 2000.
At first I worked by myself, under a name/banner of Free Flow Yoga,
supported by my first yoga teacher and mentor James Critchlow. Over the
years the breadth and depth of programmes and topics has grown, many
different approaches/methods of teaching/sharing have been explored.
Since the introduction of ‘teacher training’ (never comfortable with
using this term…) in 2007 trainee teachers started assisting in the
classes as supporting yoga instructors. Teacher training programmes with
me run exclusively on individual basis, in most cases based on an
apprenticeship-like approach. This is an integral part of my work. I
don’t do run-of-the-mill (or run-of-the-studio) commerce led, profit
driven courses, only direct, personally tailored programmes to suit your
needs. Please see more details on the Teacher Training page.
It is worth to mention here that the words ‘teaching’ or ‘instructor’
are not strictly appropriate to reflect how I see helping people to
learn yoga. Krishnamurti said it very well when stating “you have to
become your own teacher and your own disciple” – so I am more of a
facilitator of learning, a mentor – not one who assumes some position of
the ‘knower’ and ‘bestows knowledge’.
People are learning and working at various levels – we have a wide range
of yoga practitioners, trainee mentors, active teachers and yoga
instructors cooperating, sharing our knowledge and experience of yoga.
Many of our classes are assisted by trainee instructors, so those
attending the classes get more attention and adjustments to make sure
they learn the postures and movements safely and correctly, while the
trainees/apprentices gain valuable hands-on experience in adjusting and
instructing. When apprentices complete their training and set up their
own classes, they continue to have my support as a mentor, if they
require it.
My work is developing locally, UK-wide and internationally, sharing
the methodology with willing groups and individuals in Hungary, Poland
and Latvia, with more to come…
People come to the yoga classes, yoga workshops and teacher training
from many different backgrounds and with great variety of experience –
some practice the Ashtanga style, some want to become an Ashtanga Yoga
teacher, others may have been practicing Iyengar Yoga, Sivananda Yoga or
Jivamukti Yoga, and some are just taking the first closer look at yoga –
suitable level of learning experience can be provided for most people.
